For their flagship Dam Square store in Amsterdam, deBijenkorf asked us to design a books and media department of some 1525 sq metres.
We created a space where customers are insulated from bustle, so they can enjoy the book buying experience without feeling as if they are in a department store.
Using thoughtful layout schemes to keep the book sections away from the traffic areas, we introduced graphic destination zones featuring famous contemporary Dutch writers. Around these zones are dwell areas where you can sit and read a while in between browsing.
The mainly female magazines section uses softer lighting at a lower height level, acting both as a signpost from afar and an invitation to browse when you are closer.
The department comprises books, CDs and DVDs, newspapers, magazines and stationery.
